This event is aimed at interested students to introduce the tantalizing beauties and difficult challenges of Particle Physics and present the opportunities to those interested.
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN has been in operation since 2008 and it delivered an enormous amount of data to the ATLAS and CMS experiments.
Among the main achievements is the observation of the Higgs boson in 2012, and its discovery led to the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physics awarded to François Englert and Peter Higgs "for the theoretical discovery of a mechanism that contributes to our understanding of the origin of mass of subatomic particles, and which recently was confirmed through the discovery of the predicted fundamental particle, by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN's Large Hadron Collider."
The CMS experiment published more than 1000 scientific physics paper, mostly through dedicated work developed by students.
LIP is a member of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the LHC since its inception in 1992. The group is involved in data analysis, experiment operation and maintenance, and detector upgrades for the High-Luminosity Phase. Citing the report of the recent Institutional Evaluation performed by an International review panel nominated by FCT: "The LIP-CMS group, while small in size, is really outstanding and world-class".
The LIP-CMS group is actively involved in the tests of the Standard Model, studies of Higgs boson properties, and searches for New Physics. For the experiment operation and detector upgrades, the group is directly involved in the Precision Proton Spectrometer and the Timing Detector. Both systems bring innovative ideas to the realm of Particle Physics and enhance the physics opportunities.
Students in our group have traditionally been directly involved in data analysis and detector responsibilities, and principal authors of leading publications in the field.
