Description
The EGI Federation has provided federated e-infrastructure services to European and global science for over 15 years. As artificial intelligence increasingly permeates every scientific domain, EGI has begun adapting its infrastructure to better serve AI-driven science. The talk reviews EGI's early experiences with AI, drawing lessons from the interTwin and iMagine Horizon Europe projects on building digital twins and image-analysis platforms across physics, environmental, and aquatic sciences. Building on these lessons, we present the AI-specific strategy that emerges from the recently approved EGI Federation Strategy 2026–2030, organised around three pillars: 1) expanding EGI's sovereign compute-data federation with AI-ready resources, software frameworks, and datasets; 2) eliminating policy and funding barriers that limit cross-border access and delivery; and 3) strengthening a resilient AI research and innovation ecosystem across EGI's members and projects. We describe the ongoing and emerging projects that implement each pillar, including federated LLM inference, AI-ready data platforms, and skills-development initiatives, and discuss how these efforts align with related initiatives such as EuroHPC's AI Factories and the RAISE initiative.
