The past few decades have seen an explosion of interest in quantum technologies in general, and quantum computation in particular. When designing applications, it is useful to talk about quantum operations as unitary evolutions. However, in practice, not every unitary can be perfectly implementable: first, quantum systems are not perfectly isolated; and second, we are restricted by the Hamiltonians that physical reality allows. I will talk about consequences of these limitations, and my recent work in problems of quantum control.
