Description

Ocean observations and multidisciplinary datasets—ranging from in situ and satellite time series to high-resolution 3D physical-biogeochemical simulations and plankton imagery—are fundamental for advancing marine research and producing actionable marine services that support environmental policies, fisheries management, aquaculture, and public safety. Developing robust, standardized infrastructures is critical to bridge the gap between raw ocean data and complex scientific applications, such as ecosystem health assessment, fish recruitment forecasting, early detection of eutrophication, and coastal hazard mitigation.
This communication presents recent research advancements by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO-CSIC) in deploying robust data infrastructures and operational services. Adhering to FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable), IEO leverages open-source tools and OGC standards (such as GeoNetwork catalogues like IEO NODC) to ensure seamless data discovery and compliance with frameworks like the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). A practical expression of these interoperable research services is seen in operational tools translating complex oceanographic data into direct support for scientific analysis, public administration decision-making, and coastal safety.
Building upon these foundations and the recently finished Galician Marine Sciences Program and partners like CESGA, MeteoGalicia, INTECMAR, CETMAR, and local universities; we demonstrate how High-Performance Computing (HPC) and AI-ready workflows can power automated research pipelines within the newly established European AI Factory at CESGA (project 1HealthAI). This research initiative integrates environmental, marine, and health dimensions under a One Health framework, transforming complex multidimensional data into reliable, real-time products and probabilistic ecological risk indicators. One initial illustration of these developments is Carabelas—an interactive web platform and Telegram bot developed by CESGA and IEO-CSIC with support from the OneHealth Data Space. By translating complex circulation and wind models into real-time risk assessments for the arrival of Physalia physalis across more than 570 Galician beaches, Carabelas exemplifies how advanced digital infrastructures and European AI factories successfully bridge cutting-edge marine research with citizen-oriented operational services. Among other applications, tools for early warning of the risk of Harmful Algal Blooms already demonstrated at IEO-CSIC in the framework of EU projects are currently adapted to run in the 1HealthAI platform.
