Description
The Galicia Supercomputing Centre (CESGA) is undergoing its most significant infrastructure renewal since its foundation, backed by a joint investment from the Xunta de Galicia of over €56 million. This talk presents the three pillars of this transformation and their implications for the Iberian e-infrastructure community.
First, a new data centre is under construction at the Sionlla industrial estate in Santiago de Compostela, with completion expected in summer 2026. It is designed around energy-efficiency and sustainability criteria, including on-site photovoltaic generation and advanced cooling and power systems.
Second, this facility will host FinisTerrae IV, CESGA's next-generation supercomputer, explicitly oriented toward artificial intelligence workloads and delivering substantial gains in memory bandwidth, interconnect speed, and storage capacity over its predecessor, FinisTerrae III.
Third, CESGA is deploying two quantum computing systems from IQM Quantum Computers: a 54-qubit superconducting "Radiance" machine for research, and a 5-qubit "Spark" system dedicated to training and algorithm development — making CESGA one of the first public research centres in Spain to offer on-premise quantum hardware alongside classical HPC.
We discuss how these investments extend CESGA's long-standing role in European programmes such as EuroHPC, EuroCC, EGI-ACE and EOSC, and outline the opportunities they open for Iberian researchers in AI, hybrid classical–quantum computing, and data-intensive science.
