Description
The transition to the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) introduces an unprecedented computing challenge, with baseline computing and disk resource requirements projected to roughly double those of Run 3. This transition represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to fundamentally reconsider and evolve how the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) operates.
To meet these demands, WLCG is leveraging a highly collaborative, bottom-up approach through the Open Technical Forum (OTF) to gather input from facility operators, software developers, and experiments. Guided by this community engagement, the WLCG Technical Coordination Board (TCB) is shaping a coherent, ambitious, yet realistic Technical Roadmap. This strategic document explicitly aligns technical challenges and experiment needs with infrastructure capabilities, ensuring concrete plans with clear priorities, measurable milestones, and committed effort across our wider partner ecosystem.
This plenary will detail how WLCG is technically preparing for the HL-LHC transition. We will explore actionable milestones across the roadmap's core pillars: facility evolution, data management, network infrastructure, and workflow management. Furthermore, we will highlight the modernization of grid services, the transition to token-based Security and AAI, the integration of new architectures such as GPUs, and our critical focus on environmental and operational sustainability. By systematically bridging these technical gaps today, the federated computing community is actively building a resilient, scalable infrastructure for the next decade of high-energy physics.
