Description
Data Spaces are federated ecosystems for trusted data sharing. In this context, the Green Deal Data Space (GDDS), implemented by the SAGE project, aims to enable secure, reliable, and interoperable data sharing across environmental and sustainability domains. Data Spaces are distributed by nature, which means that participants in the GDDS must deploy and manage a set of components that ensure interoperability within the data space. This involves an inherent complexity that requires specialist IT knowledge, and it is an error-prone process that affects not only participant organisations in the initial consortium, but also others beyond it. To address this challenge, the SAGE project is developing an automated deployment approach, complemented by a streamlined onboarding process and deployment approach that simplifies infrastructure provisioning and reduces the effort required to become a GDDS participant.
This work leverages the Infrastructure Manager (IM), an open-source cloud orchestration service, to automate the deployment of core GDDS services. The solution supports the installation of the SAGE Data Connector stack, which includes the data connector, database, and dashboard, as well as optional components such as an Identity Provider based on Keycloak, an Identity Hub for the management of Verifiable Credentials, and storage services. Deployments are performed through the IM web interface, which guides users through a simple and intuitive process, allowing them to authenticate using their existing credentials, select the desired components to be installed, adjust the configurable settings, and choose the target cloud provider on which the infrastructure will be provisioned.
By encapsulating the deployment and configuration procedures into reusable IM recipes and providing a guided onboarding workflow, the proposed solution reduces deployment complexity, improves reproducibility across cloud environments, and lowers the entry barrier for new organisations joining the GDDS. This work demonstrates how infrastructure automation can facilitate the scalable adoption of data space technologies and support the expansion of the SAGE ecosystem beyond the original consortium.
