In this presentation we discuss the current climate emergency and the targets for GHG emission cuts required in 2030, in light of the 2015 Paris Agreement. Energy systems modelling plays a crucial role in this matter, particularly for advising policy makers, as was the recent case in Portugal with the Carbon Neutrality Roadmap 2050 (RNC2050), which was adopted by the current government as official policy. We also discuss past projections made by the IEA, for CO2 emissions and renewable energy implementation, how they compare with what was historically observed, and what lessons can be extracted from such comparisons.
