Measuring the ever-changing geomagnetic field

The Earth's magnetic field is essential for life on our planet by protecting us from the harmful solar wind. It is a phenomenon resulting from the suporposition of several different sources, continously varying in space and time. Our understanding of its origin in the Earth's core and the reasons for its variations are still limited. From the first use of the compass to today's use in navigation, the geomagnetic field is also present in our daily lives. It is then an important task to observe and measure the ever-changing geomagnetic field the most accurately as possible. The different kinds of geomagnetic field measurements are going to be presented, from terrestial observations at ground observatories to the latest ESA satellite Swarm mission measurements. Comparison between them and their complementarity are also to be discussed.”
