The direct search for dark matter particles with mass below the GeV scale

The lack of any conclusive signal from the dark matter searches carried out so far has motivated the development of new experiments with increased sensitivity. In this seminar I will review the current direct searches for dark matter particles in a mass range below that explored so far, with a focus on SuperCDMS. In addition, I will briefly discuss some new direct detection approaches that are currently in the R&D stage, that might allow to push the mass thresholds even further down in the future
