Description
The High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) will deliver unprecedented luminosities, leading to extreme pileup that will challenge ATLAS event reconstruction, particularly in the endcap and forward regions where the LAr calorimeter granularity and inner-tracker resolution are limited.
To mitigate these effects, ATLAS will install the High-Granularity Timing Detector (HGTD) in front of the LAr endcap calorimeters. Covering 2.4 < \eta < 4.0, the HGTD enhances the new all-silicon Inner Tracker capabilities by providing per-track timing resolutions of about 35 ps through two double-sided layers of LGAD silicon sensors. Its 1.3 mm × 1.3 mm cells yield ~3.7 million channels, enabling precise vertex association and improved pileup rejection.
This seminar will present the detector requirements, technical design, and project status, along with key R&D results from the sensor development, readout ASIC, and component testing campaigns.
