Supersonic jet expansions can cool down molecules close to absolute zero. This creates the ideal conditions for gas phase spectroscopy: the target molecules can be probed in their lowest-energy states and in complete isolation, safe from any matrix or collisional perturbations. Besides theoretical concepts, this presentation will address several state-of-the-art technologies used to trigger supersonic jet expansions in molecular spectroscopy applications.
